Panlatomiki SA take the green initiative with investment in a Sandvik QA452 Doublescreen

The global need to recycle more and convert waste into reusable products plays a crucial role in today’s drive to a more sustainable future. Not only does recycling promote a more circular economy, reusing materials and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill but it also significantly reduces the environmental impact, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and conserving energy and water.

One company which decided to take the green initiative and branch out into recycling is Panlatomiki SA in Greece. Initially operating as a transportation company in Markopoulo located in the East Attica municipality, owner of the company, Vaggelis Koltsidas, decided it was time to diversify and branch into the recycling sector following Government waste management legislation introduced over the past few years.

Relatively new to the recycling sector, Greece initiated a new law in July 2021, Law 4819/2021, aimed at establishing a comprehensive framework for waste management and alternative management as well as at adapting to the requirements of circular economy.*

Taking the opportunity and gap in the market, Panlatomiki SA started to recycle material from construction waste using a small stationary impact crusher. With the growing demand from local companies and increase in material delivered to their site for processing, Vaggelis soon realized the need to invest in a mobile screening plant for sorting and separating the material into different resellable and reusable fractions.

Contacting local authorized distributor and supplier of Sandvik mobile crushing and screening equipment in Greece, Afoi Malliaropoulos, the latest innovation in the Sandvik range of Doublescreen products, the QA452 Doublescreen, was proposed as the best solution to meet the company’s varied specification and production requirements.

One of the key advantages of the QA452 is the Sandvik Doublescreen system, which typically outperforms traditional screens by up to 30%, offering a tailored rock processing solution for quarry, recycling, and mining industries.

Exceptional flexibility and screening accuracy

The operating principle is based on the use of two screen boxes working independently of each other. The first screen box can be tilted through a wide range of angles compared with the second box which considerably increases screening accuracy. The primary screen performs as a fines extractor, whilst the secondary screen performs as a grader. Two processes on one plant, offering exceptional flexibility, excellent separation, accurate grading and massive throughput.

The Sandvik QA452 features two triple-deck inline screen boxes, each with equal size providing 9 m3 / 100 sq. ft of screening area. Designed for versatility and ease of maintenance, the primary screen can be hydraulically separated to gain better access for servicing and screen media changes. The addition of a fourth conveyor, an oversize cross conveyor, means greater oversize material extraction and this can be reversed, allowing the plant to function like a two-deck screen with oversize and mid-overs discharged together.

Vaggelis said their decision to choose the Sandvik QA452 was influenced by two factors,

firstly we needed a mobile screen capable of providing maximum throughput, and at the same time, we needed a trusted supplier who would be reliable and available at all times for aftermarket support.

Lower environmental impact

The QA452 triple-deck screen features numerous innovations developed to improve throughput, safety, connectivity as well as provide a more sustainable and user-friendly solution for our customers. The machine possesses a control panel with color-coded pushbuttons and sequential start-up capability for speed and ease of set-up. It provides a lower environmental impact due to reduced fuel consumption and the latest powerpack onboard offers less operating noise and low emissions. In addition, the hydraulic system has been enhanced to reduce energy wastage, and its hydraulic oil change intervals have been extended from 2000-4000 hours meaning up to 50% less hydraulic oil is consumed over 10,000 hours of machine usage (subject to oil sampling).

All mobile units manufactured at our Northern Ireland facility also leave the factory with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% over the life cycle of the fuel compared to fossil diesel according to EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC).

Currently processing excavation materials with a feed size of 80mm, the company is processing 0-5mm, 5-12mm and 12-32mm at approximately 220 t/h. The end- product is used as backfill material in ditches, as sub-base for road construction and also for regular surface maintenance of a local horse racing track.

Vaggelis says “although we have only been working with our Sandvik equipment for a short period of time, we are happy with the high-quality screening and accuracy of the product. The high level of service provided from our dealer, Afoi Malliaropoulos, has been excellent. If the quality continues, we would have no reservations in purchasing from them again if the need arises in the near future.”
